44g Targumim Codes (TAR and TAM Databases) |
|
BibleWorks has text and morphology databases for the Targumim. They have been provided courtesy of Dr. Stephen A. Kaufman, Professor of Bible and Cognate Literature at Hebrew Union College (HUC) and Editor-in-chief, the Comprehensive Aramaic Lexicon. This project should be seen as a work in progress, and interested users are encouraged to check frequently for updates. The Targumim are provided in the usual text and morphology versions familiar to BibleWorks users. The abbreviations are TAR for the text and TAM for the morphology. There are, however, a number of documents in the Targum collection that are placed in separate versions because the cover the same Biblical Books as the basic TAR file. This allows you to view all the Targum files for a book at once in the Browse Window. These additiona "versions" are as follows:
Text | Morphology | Content |
TAR | TAM | Mostly Onkelos and Jonathan |
PJT | PJM | PseudoJonathan |
NMT | NMM | NeoMaginalia |
FTT | FTM | FragTargums,TgSheniSuppEsther,TgTosefProphets, |
CGT | CGM | Cairo Geniza |
NFT | NFM | Neofiti |
Note that three of the CAL files are combined into one version (FTT). There is no book overlap in these files so that just saves some versions.
All of the files but Neofiti and PesudoJonathan have data from multiple manuscripts. For some verses therefore you will see two sets of verse data. They will be separated by a superscript number which corresponds to the content tag in the CAL files for that verse. People familiar with the CAL files will understand what is meant.
The TAR and TAM files are laid out as follows:

The Hebrew Comprehensive Aramaic Lexicon (CAL) project at HUC has at present only incomplete morphological tags for the Targumim. We have attempted to convert these where possible to BibleWorks codes (as in the WTM) to make use of the data a little easier for experienced BibleWorks users. The following table shows how the CAL codes have been converted.

The CAL Project files have a rather complex variant marking system. We have attempted to carry as much of this over as possible into BibleWorks using standard BibleWorks terminology. In a string of variants the first variant is marked with the <...Rk> tag, which usually means a "Kethib" reading. Subsequent variants are marked with the <...Rq> tag, which is usually used for a "Qere" reading. In addition to this marking, the variants are identified with new coding tags in the TAM text: V1, V2, V3, V4, and V5 indicate the variant number in a series of variants. So "V1" and "Rk" will always appear together. To have the "Rq" variants and the V2 through V5 tags visible to the search engine you will need to enable both qere and kethib settings in the Setup | Option Flags | General Hebrew Options.
In Targum versions the variants will be marked with a superscript numeral indicating the variant number in the CAL database files. The variants can also be color coded. You can change the colors by selecting Tools | Choose Targum Variant Colors from the main menu. The default is for the variants to be marked in gray.
An "editorial" tag has also been added to mark editorial changes. "...Ea..." marks text added by the editor (angle brackets are used in the CAL text) and "...Eb..." marks text deleted by the editor (curly braces are used in the CAL text).
As in the WTM, Rx, Vx, and Ex are used as placeholders so the coding scheme can be fixed‑field.
