Doing Searches on the Lexicon Text

This button opens the BibleWorks Lexicon and Dictionary Browser.  The browser can also be opened in the Main Menu by selecting Resources | Bible Dictionaries or Resources | Greek/Hebrew Lexicons. The dropdown arrow lists open browsers if you have more than one open. You can open as many as you need.

Browser Capabilities

This window accesses the many Bible dictionaries and Greek and Hebrew lexicons in BibleWorks. Context menu lookups from English, Greek, or Hebrew versions display results here.  With this browser:

§         You can look up any word or entry in any of the supported databases by typing in the word or entry, or by scrolling through a complete list of entries.

§         You can do wildcard searches on both the list of entries and on the entire text of the databases. You can search the body text for Greek, Hebrew and English words.

§         You can view each entry in context and scroll through it as you would read a book.

§         You can copy selected text to the clipboard to insert in your favorite word processor.

Browser Interface

The Lexicon/Dictionary Browser Window has the following areas:

The Reload Button
This button reloads the full lexicon/dictionary word list. This is necessary only if the list has been replaced with search results.

The History Save Button

Clicking on this button will save the current Lexicon location in the lexicon history list box to the right of the button.

The History List Box

This list box contains a list of lexicon/dictionary locations that you have visited and saved with the History Save Button.

The Search Text Box

This is where you enter words to look up in the lexicon or dictionary. You can use wildcards and if multiple entries are found a list will replace the lexicon entry list on the far left.

The Entry List Box

The left-hand list box normally contains an alphabetical listing of all database words or entries. You can do a wildcard search by entering a word in the text box at the top of the browser. If there is more than one match to your query the list box will be replaced with a list of the matches. For example, if you enter the line *ew as a search word with a Greek dictionary loaded, you will see a list of all Greek words ending in ew. To restore the full word list to the list box, click the Reload button above the list. You can scroll through the list and click any entry to see the full text of the entry in the text area to the right of the list. If you do a single word search, this list will be scrolled to the proper location to display the word, while the text area on the right will display the full text of the entry.

The Lexicon Entry Text Area

The area to the right of the Entry List Box contains the full text of the lexicon or dictionary. You can scroll through the text using the scrollbar on the right.

The Browser Menu

Dropdown menus across the top of the browser permit you to choose a current lexicon or dictionary or copy selected text to the clipboard. You can also initiate searches on the full lexicon/dictionary text via the Edit | Search menu item.

Lexicons

This menu item contains a list of available Hebrew and Greek Lexicons. The Hebrew Lexicons will be listed first, then the Greek. The list will vary depending on what you have installed. To display a lexicon select it from the menu.

Dictionaries

This menu item contains a list of available Dictionaries. The list will vary depending on what you have installed. To display a dictionary select it from the menu.

Doing Searches on the Lexicon Text

Searches entered in the text box at the top of the browser will search the word list displayed on the left.  To search the actual body of the lexicon or dictionary, click the Edit | Search menu selection to open a search window. This window has a place for you to type the word or phrase you want to find. You can also specify the search direction (up or down), the type of search (And, Or, String) and the language (Greek, Hebrew, English) of the word you are seeking. For AND searches, all the words must appear in the same paragraph for a match. The granularity of the search is at the paragraph level.

The options menu allows you to set two options that have an effect on lexicons (like BDAG and HALOT) with verse references tagged internally. If Highlight Current Verse is checked, references to the current Browse Window verse in the lexicon will be highlighted. The Reset Verse Highlight Ref option resets the variable that stores the current verse.

Context Menu

The Lexicon Entry Text Window has a context menu with these entries if your right click on selected text:

§         Copy text to clipboard
This option will copy selected text to the clipboard.

§         Copt text to editor
This option will copy selected text to the BibleWorks editor.
