24 The Search Statistics Window

Clicking on this button will open the Detailed Statistics Window which displays a detailed statistical analysis of the last search done. Brief statistics are available immediately after doing a Command Line search by looking at the display area in the far left area of the Main Window Status Bar. If these statistics are too brief you can click on this Detailed Statistics button or double-click on the status area itself to get more information. This section discusses interpretation of the statistics in these two areas.

Interpreting the Status Area Search Statistics

When you do a search, the status bar across the bottom of the BibleWorks main window displays the basic statistics for the search. This section explains how to interpret the statistics. In addition, detailed statistics for the search are available in the Detailed Statistics Window. This window is also described below.

In order to make the best use of these statistics you will need to understand the distinctions between the various statistics. The statistics involve verses, words, and hits. It is important to understand how these work together. A hit (or a match) is composed of one or more words satisfying the search conditions. For example, in a search looking for all verses containing a noun and a verb, a hit is composed of two words where the two words are a noun-verb pair found in a verse. In addition, a hit may be contained within a verse, or span several verses, and a verse may contain more than one hit. In the example above, the exhaustive count of hits must count all noun-verb pairs, so that if a given verse contained two nouns and three verbs, there would be six unique noun-verbs pairs, and thus, six hits within that verse.

The status bar across the bottom of the main window in BibleWorks displays the follow basic statistics after each search:

§         Number of Verses
This first statistic gives the total number of verses which contained a hit. Note that if you are doing a linear search that crosses verse boundaries (see More Complex Word and Phrase Searches), this parameter has limited significance. But for the vast majority of search types its meaning is straight-forward.

§         Number of Words/Forms
This statistic gives the total number of words or forms involved in the search. For simple searches, this is just the number of words entered on the Command Line. If your search contained wild cards, this parameter includes all words matched by the wild-card(s) regardless of whether or not they were included in the final list of verses matched.

§         Number of Hits
This statistic gives the number of hits (as defined above) that occurred over all verses. The number of hits is determined by permuting the matches over each verse. For example, if we do a search on <.god love> one of the verses found will be 1 John 4:7. Note that there are 6 hits in this verse as follows:

1.

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. {is born: or, has been born

2.

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. {is born: or, has been born

3.

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. {is born: or, has been born

4.

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. {is born: or, has been born

5.

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. {is born: or, has been born

6.

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. {is born: or, has been born

There are six different combinations of these two words in this single verse, so there are six hits. If you do not want permutations to be counted you can go into the Options Window under the Option Flags/Command Line Search Options section and turn off the "Compute Search Window hits by permutation" flag. If you do that you will get 5 hits in this verse, namely:

Beloved, let us love one another

for love is of God

and every one that loveth is born of God,

and knoweth God. {is born: or, has been born

This is done just by adding up the matched words in a verse (the highlights).

Verse Limits Settings and Statistics in the Search Window

On occasion you will see statistics in parentheses. When you see the results in this format it indicates that you have limited the search via the Search Limits Window to certain books. The statistics in parentheses tell you what the results would have been if you had searched the entire version of the Bible that you are currently using as a search version. If you are doing concatenated searches (i.e. multiple searches enclosed in parentheses) this additional information is not reported even if you have search limits set. However, if limits are set on the current search version, an asterisk will always precede the statistical information.

The Detailed Statistics Window

To examine the results of a search in even more detail, you need to look at the Detailed Statistics Window. When you open up the Detailed Statistics Window, a detailed list of statistics per chapter or per book will be displayed. You can choose from several types of statistics, some based on hit counts, some based on word counts, and some based on verse counts. You can manipulate the graph, copy it to the clipboard, export it, and print it.

To open a Detailed Statistics Window displaying the details of the last search done, you can do one of the following:

§         Double-click the status bar message area (where the search results are displayed), at the bottom of the main window of BibleWorks.

§         Click on the  button in the button bar in the main window of BibleWorks.

§         Select Search | Detailed Statistics Window from the main menu.

When viewing the results in this window, you can resize the window by moving the mouse over the border of the window. When the mouse cursor turns into a resizing arrow, click and hold down the left mouse button and resize the window. This allows you to display more of the graph at once. The configuration options are as follows:

What to Plot

This dropdown determines how the search statistics are plotted.
When Show chapters is not checked, these options are visible:

§         Number of verses in the book containing a hit - For each book of the Bible version, the number of verses containing one or more hits is shown for each book in the Bible version.

§         Number of hits in the book - For each book of the Bible version, the number of hits in the book is shown.

§         %: (verses in the book with a hit) / (verses in book) - For each book in the Bible version, this shows the percentage of verses in the book that contain one or more hits.

§         %: (hits in the book) / (hits in version) - For each book in the Bible version, this shows the percentage of the total hits in the Bible version occurring in each book.

§         %: (verses in the book with a hit) / (verses in version) - For each book in the Bible version, this shows the percentage of the total number of verses in the version that occur in this book of the Bible and also contain a hit.

Sort books by

This option allows you to specify the sorting order of the data. The data can be sorted according to regular book name order, according to ascending statistics values, according to descending statistics values, or according to a custom book ordering. See below.

§         Show chapters - Shows statistics per chapter, instead of per book. This changes the options that appear in What to plot.

§         Show zeros - Shows statistics, even if the value is zero. When this option is not checked, only books (or chapters) with a value greater than zero are displayed.

§         Filter using Search Window limits - Limits the results displayed to the ranges specified in the Search Window search limits. See Setting Search Limits for more information.

§         Make fit - Condenses the results graph so that the entire graph of results fits into the window. When the window is resized, the graph automatically will shrink or grow to fill the window. When this option is off, the graph is displayed using the Search Window font and a scroll bar appears allowing you to scroll through the graph.

§         Swap axis - Displays book names across the horizontal axis, instead of the vertical axis.

§         Copy Window - Opens a copy of the current window. When subsequent queries are run, they will appear in the original window, but you can save a set of results by opening another copy of the current window using this button.

§         Export to | ...File - Saves the displayed statistics as an ASCII text file. This data can be read by a spreadsheet program or word processor. To export the other statistics, select the statistics to be saved in the What to plot dropdown (see above), and then select this option.

§         Export to | ...Clipboard - Saves the visible part of the results graph to the clipboard. This can be pasted into a word processing program. To copy the entire graph, first select the Make fit checkbox, and then select this option.

§         Export to | ...Printer - Prints the visible part of the results graph. To print the entire graph, first select the Make fit checkbox, and then select this option.

Creating Custom Book Orderings

You can customize the order in which books of the Bible versions are displayed in the Detailed Statistics Window.

When you select [Edit custom orders] from the Sort books by dropdown, the Custom Book Order Window will open up. Using the options in this window you can create up to four custom book orderings for the Detailed Statistics Window. In the Short menu name field, you enter the title for the custom ordering. This title will appear in the Sort books by dropdown. The Sort order field is where you specify the book ordering. You must use the standard three-letter book names (see Book Name Abbreviations for more information). Not all books in the Bible version have to be entered in these fields. Books that are not listed in this field will be automatically added to the end of the ordering, appearing in the standard sort order for Bible books.
